Mohit Sharma on MS Dhoni: We've got a lot of abuse from him

Mohit Sharma was part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise for four seasons

Mohit Sharma, former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) bowler, who till the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2024 was with Gujarat Titans (GT), revealed his relationship with MS Dhoni, captain with joint most league titles in the competition.

"We've got a lot of abuse from him. But he always says, what happens on the field stays there. Later, he will make you understand but never be angry with you. I have heard a lot from him,” Mohit was quoted as saying on the 2 Sloggers podcast.

Revealing the reason behind those moments when ‘captain cool’ would lose his cool, Mohit said, “Being a fast bowler, you tend to lose focus. If he waves at you and you are facing towards some other end. If someone from the public says something, you react. Because of things like this, I've copped a lot of flak from him."

Though Mohit last played a game for CSK way back in 2019, he was part of the 2023 IPL final, where Chennai beat Gujarat to win their fifth title. However, the Haryana-born believes that his role has been taken over by Deepak Chahar, and it is not just in bowling but also in hearing an earful from the captain.

Narrating a story when Deepak bowled a knuckleball despite being asked by Dhoni not to do so, Mohit said, “Everyone saw Dhoni bhai going to Deepak and handing him an earful after that ball. So when he came back to the dressing room, we asked what happened, and Deepak said, ‘You know what he said? He said a few wonderful things [likely abuses], and then he added, 'Bewakoof tu nahi hai, bewakoof main hu.’ So that is a tale we always remember.”

Mohit has played 112 games in the IPL and taken 132 wickets in it.
