IPL 2025 Venue Analysis: Pacers Will Look To Shine, Batters Will Hope To Score Big In Ahmedabad

We look at what to expect from the Ahmedabad surface in the IPL 2025

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is not just a ground with a big capacity; it has also been a venue for big scores, as the epic stadium has seen some big totals posted over the last couple of seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Dew has been a major factor in Ahmedabad, resulting in captains chasing after winning the toss over the last two seasons. Teams batting first must aim above 200 to have a chance of defending at this venue, as the average first-innings winning score is 198.

Pacers have done extremely well, taking nearly 70% of the wickets at this venue in the last two seasons. They might have a higher economy rate of 9.4 compared to spinners, who conceded 8.8 per over. But the bowling strike rate of 17.8 makes it up for the runs conceded.

Looking at pace and spin records by phases, both have been smashed in powerplay, conceding nearly nine runs per over. Spinners had a terrible time in the middle overs, averaging 42.2, the worst in any phase for a bowling type.

Pacers have had a terrific time in Ahmedabad. They have taken 136 wickets at an excellent bowling SR of 17.8 which is the best for a pace attack at a venue in this tournament since 2023.

BOWLERS HAVE HAD SUCCESS IN POWERPLAY & SLOG OVERS

Ahmedabad has been one of the few venues where bowlers have found success in powerplay in the last couple of seasons. The bowling SR of 21.9 here is the best at a venue in IPL since 2023.

Slog overs have been good for bowlers in Ahmedabad in the last two seasons, as the bowling SR at this venue has been the best in this phase. The economy, too, has been decent at 10.5 compared to other venues.

Unfortunately, the middle overs phase has not been rewarding like the powerplay and slog overs in Ahmedabad. The bowling average of 37.2 is the worst bowling average in overs 7-15 at a venue in the IPL over the last two seasons.

FINGER SPINNERS HAD A BETTER SEASON THAN WRIST SPINNERS IN 2024

Wrist spin bowlers did not have the best times in IPL 2024. A major chunk of the numbers belongs to Rashid Khan, who had a bad season last year. Wrist spinners maintained an average of 40.8 in 2024 compared to 28.9 in 2023.

Contrasting to the wrist spinners, the finger spinners had a better 2024 season than 2023, as they struck every 24 deliveries compared to every 41 deliveries in the 2023 edition.
