Archie Vaughan takes maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket

In just his second first-class game, Vaughan Jr showed his worth with the ball

It took Archie Vaughan, son of former England skipper Michael, just two games to put on a headlining act, with the 18-year-old picking up a six-wicket haul against Surrey on September 10 (Tuesday) in just his second first-class appearance. Earlier in the clash, the right-handed opener scored a 107-ball 44 to help Somerset get to 317, with Shakib Al Hasan picking up a four-wicket haul.

In his first-ever first-class fixture, the off-spinner had picked up three wickets, showing a trailer of his talent. But in the second game, Vaughan Jr showed his prowess with the ball, picking up his maiden five-wicket haul. The off-spinner first removed Dom Sibley after the right-hander put on a stubborn display for his 16.

Vaughan Jr then removed the other opener, Rory Burns, to pick up his second wicket and equal his best figures. The off-spinner didn’t stop there, accounting for Ben Geddes with his beautiful off-spin action to finish with three wickets at the end of the second day’s play.

The 18-year-old picked up from where he had left on Day 3, removing Ben Foakes caught and bowled before accounting for both Jordan Clark and Cameron Steel to pick up six in the innings.

At the time of writing this, the off-spinner has picked up six wickets, conceding 87 runs.
