Varun Chakaravarthy Stresses On Finding Set Core Ahead Of KKR’s IPL Season Opener

The mystery spinner is coming off a victorious Champions Trophy with India

The defending Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), will be back in action at the iconic Eden Gardens in the 2025 IPL season opener.

KKR are all set to clash against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening match of the 18th edition of the competition after a dominant last season and being crowned the undisputed champions.

KKR will aim to carry on from last season's success. Varun Chakaravarthy, who was the cornerstone of KKR’s success last year, feels that the team needs to find its solid core, which will help it in the season ahead.

“The squad looks good,” Chakaravarthy said.

“I think it’s about cracking the code and having the best playing XI performing consistently. If we are able to get a set core in the first 3 matches, then we have great chances ahead in this season.”

When asked how he is preparing for the season after a really successful last few months with the Indians, during which he won the Champions Trophy with the side, Chakaravarthy focused on consistency and said that he has a few new variations that he might try in the IPL.

“The main thing is working on consistency, which is the toughest thing to master and I’m putting in constant work in order to achieve that,” the myster spinner said.

“And, of course, I’m working on a few other deliveries, which I'm hoping will come off nicely in the upcoming games.”

Chakaravarthy has also been quite successful against RCB in the past, but rather than pointing at what makes him successful against the side, the spinner said that the conditions were more favourable to him in those matches.

“..the situation of those matches [against RCB] which helped me pick wickets,” Chakaravarthy said.

“In all those games, the conditions and the situations were completely favourable towards us, so I was able to extract the best possible result.”

KKR will be looking forward to adding to the winning streak with wins in the last four consecutive games against RCB. With a favourable 20-14 head-to-head record, the defending champions will be eager to kick off their title defence with a victory.
