Reactions galore on Beth Mooney's bizarre runout

In the 2nd innings, Mooney had hit seven fours and was looking to play a big knock, until the strange 'brain fade' happened

Beth Mooney had begun the second innings for Australia in astounding fashion, creaming seven boundaries against the opening Indian bowlers, who failed to bowl on tight lines. She was comfortably batting on 33 off 36 deliveries when a 'brain fade' moment happened, and all the promise of a big innings was quashed in the most bizarre manner possible.

It was the fourth ball of the 12th over when Sneh Rana bowled a gentle full delivery, which Mooney easily defended. However, for some inexplicable reason, Mooney decided to venture out of her crease for a non-existent run as Richa Ghosh fielded the ball at silly point. As soon as the debutante caught the ball, she saw that Mooney was out of her crease and broke the stumps with a throw. Mooney didn't even wait for the umpire Janani's decision. She knew she was out.

From Mooney's aimless and wrongly timed moonwalk out of the crease to Richa's display of her sharp game sense, so much happened in the blink of an eye. It was bizarre, it was brilliant, and above all, it was just plain ridiculous. Expectantly, it drew a lot of reactions on the microblogging site X, popularly known as Twitter.

Not only Jonny Bairstow, the instance reminded users of other such strange dismissals from the past.

And, of course, someone had to force-fit a Royal Challengers Bangalore reference on the situation, with the context being here that Richa Ghosh plays for RCB in the Women's Premier League.

There were many who pointed out what Mooney could have done to avoid such a 'brain fade'.

Amidst Mooney's criticism, Richa's presence of mind was also appreciated. She is having a very good debut Test with a fifty earlier, and now a run-out adds to her sweet memories from the game.

A bizarre dismissal and spirit of cricket and England not being mentioned? Not happening at all!

Despite Mooney's runout, Australia trail India's first innings score by only 30 runs by the time at the time of publishing this piece. They are looking in a good position to build a lead here with skipper Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath at the crease and seven wickets remaining.
