After India, England, Pakistan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Australia, Oman, and Bangladesh, South Africa have also announced their 7-member squad for the Hong Kong International Sixes tournament, which will begin November 1 at the Kowloon Cricket Club in Hong Kong, China.
The tournament, which has not been played since 2017, will see defending champions South Africa and 11 other teams, including India, England and Australia, participate in this six-a-side cricket contest.
The most notable name in the South African squad is the Dolphins' player JJ Smuts. An all-rounder renowned for his aggressive batting style, he has played six ODIs and 13 T20Is for the Proteas. He’ll also be the key figure from a tactical point of view for the side.
Joining him is Northern Cape Heat’s Modiri Litheko, an emerging wicketkeeper-batsman known for his quick reflexes and adaptability in short format cricket. Lions’ Evan Jones also joins the batting lineup, while Knights’ Jacques Snyman comes on board as a batting all-rounder.
In bowling, the Titans’ pacer Matthew Boast is set to challenge opponents, alongside Limpopo Impala’s pace bowler Don Radebe, whose all-round skills enhance the team's depth. Aubrey Swanepoel, a first-class cricketer with experience in the Hong Kong Sixes, is the the seventh player in the squad.
The team will be coached by South Africa Under-19 and Emerging Academy Head Coach Malibongwe Maketa.
A press statement released by the Cricket South Africa (CSA) said that, “this team combines leadership with talent, positioning them for a competitive edge on the international stage and places them in good stead to defend the title.”
The squad will arrive in Hong Kong on October 30 for the tournament that will be played between November 1 and 3.
