Shai Hope now has the joint third-most number of One-Day International (ODI) centuries for the West Indies. The right-handed batter hit 117 off 127 deliveries in the second ODI against England in Antigua on November 2 (Saturday), equalling Desmond Haynes’ tally of 17 tons for the Men in Maroon.
When it comes to the West Indies, only Chris Gayle (25) and Brian Lara (19) now have more ODI centuries than Hope, who overall has 5,331 runs in 124 innings at an average of 49.82. Apart from those 17 hundreds, Hope also has 25 half-centuries.
The West Indies got off to a terrible start in the second ODI, losing both their openers, Brandon King and Evin Lewis, inside four overs. However, that’s when Keacy Carty (71 off 77) and Hope put on 143 runs for the third wicket and put the West Indies in a good position.
Sherfane Rutherford (54 off 36) and Shimron Hetmyer (24 off 11) played fiery cameos but it was Hope who played the biggest role in taking his team past the 300-run mark. Hope hit eight fours and four maximums during his stay in the middle.
The West Indies captain now has 17 centuries in 124 innings. Hashim Amla (21), Babar Azam (19), Virat Kohli (19) and David Warner (18) are the only four batters in the history of ODI cricket to have more centuries in their first 124 innings.
Meanwhile, this was Rutherford’s fifth 50-plus score in what was his seventh innings in the 50-over format. Only Navjot Singh Sidhu, Tom Cooper, Jonathan Trott and Asif Iqbal have done that in the past.
