Pakistan's Domestic Women Players Receive Salaries Less Than Country's Minimum Wages

The domestic contracts were announced after a delay of nine months and PCB celebrated it by saying that 91 women were given central contracts

It is hard to believe that in this day and age, cricket can pay less than the minimum wage in a country. But it is the reality of domestic women cricketers in Pakistan, who, in spite of getting central contract retainers, earn less than the prescribed minimum wages for unskilled labourers.

In a report by Cricbuzz, it is written, “players were given monthly retainers worth Pakistani Rupees (PKR) 35,000 (approx USD 125), which is less than the mandated minimum pay for unskilled labourers in Pakistan, which stands at PKR 37,000.

The domestic contracts were announced after a delay of nine months and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) celebrated it by saying that 91 women were given central contracts compared to 79 last year. But not only were the retainers' fees low, but even the match fees were decreased from PKR 25,000 in the earlier contract to PKR 20,000 in this one.

The fact that international cricketers Nida Dar, who also led the Pakistan women’s cricket team at one point, and all-rounder Aliya Riaz are in the list of domestic contracted players, would be hard for them to maintain their training, diet and fitness at the international level with such less money in their account.

Even the central contracts for the national team were delayed by 10 months when 20 women were named to the list in November 2024.
