Playing his first T20I since the aforementioned historic spell at the T20 World Cup in the United States & The Caribbean, the 33-year-old took a hat-trick within eight balls of his spell in Dambulla to join Jacob Oram, Tim Southee, Michael Bracewell and Matt Henry as Kiwis to have taken a hat-trick in the shortest format of the game.
On the night, Ferguson picked a wicket on the final ball of his first over and the first two balls of his second over. He first removed Kusal Perera before trapping Kamindu Mendis LBW. On the hat-trick ball, he dismissed Sri Lanka skipper Charith Asalanka through a strangle down leg to achieve the rare feat.
The last New Zealander to take a T20I hat-trick was Henry against Pakistan in 2023 at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.
