Leigh Kasperek misses out as New Zealand announce squad for Women's World Cup

The White Ferns have however opted for left-arm orthodox Fran Jonas, who has played just two ODIs

New Zealand Women have announced their 15-member squad for the World Cup, with senior spinner Leigh Kasperek not included.

Kasperek has been New Zealand's premier bowler since the last World Cup in 2017, picking up 42 wickets from 26 ODIs, which is the most by any bowler from her country.

White Ferns coach Bob Carter said that the decision was taken keeping in mind the balance of the team. "I really felt for Leigh, she's a really fine bowler," coach Bob Carter said.

"It was based around the balance of our team. We didn't have any of the three spinners that we've selected for the World Cup in the UK, and it came down to a choice - would we take an extra spinner or would we take an extra batter, and that created a lot of debate.

"I really feel for her because she's been a great member of the White Ferns, and it's at times like that, as a selector or coach, that I wish I could have had another place."

However, New Zealand have gone in with 17-year-old left-arm orthodox spinner Fran Jonas, who has played just two international matches ahead of the veteran Kasperek. She put in impressive performances with Auckland Hearts that sees her get a place in the 15.

Frankie Mackay and Amelia Kerr would be the team's other spin options, led by Sophie Devine.

New Zealand will kick start their World Cup campaign against West Indies on March 4 at the Bay Oval.

New Zealand squad for Women's World Cup 2022: Sophie Devine (c), Amy Satterthwaite(vc), Suzie Bates, Lauren Down, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Hayley Jensen, Fran Jonas, Jess Kerr, Melie Kerr, Frankie Mackay, Rosemary Mair, Katey Martin, Hannah Rowe, Lea Tahuhu
