Dominant Jaffna Kings destroy Galle to secure historic fourth LPL title

Here is a round-up of the epic fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League

The fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) was an outstanding showcase of cricket, as it happened to be the highest run-scoring season in the LPL's history. Jaffna Kings and Galle Marvels, the top two teams in the tournament, fought out in the finals, with Jaffna coming on top and clinching their fourth title. Such dominance has never been seen in other tournaments, with Jaffa's win being their fourth in five seasons.

Having already played three finals in the past, Jaffna used all that experience to hammer Galle in the grand finale. Bhanuka Rajapaksa's destructive effort meant that Galle had got themselves to 184/6 in 20 overs, with a great chance of winning the tournament despite Asitha Fernando's figures of 3/35. However, that's where the Kings showed their class in the run chase.

Despite the early departure of Pathum Nissanka for a golden duck, Rilee Roussow never allowed the pressure to get to the eventual champions with a record 185-run partnership with Kusal Mendis. Not only did Rossouw become the only player in LPL history to score two centuries in the competition, but he also ensured that the Kings secured their fourth LPL title.

Final - Jaffna Kings beat Galle Marvels by 9 wickets

Top Performance in LPL 2024

Hits of LPL 2024

Rilee Rossouw (Jaffna Kings)

Rossouw, who won the “Player of the Tournament” award for LPL 2024, definitely deserved the title as he led the team to a record fourth championship. The South African southpaw played terrific at the #3 position, scoring 389 runs at a whopping strike rate of 174.

Tim Seifert (Galle Marvels)

Tim Seifert, the Kiwi wicketkeeper, had a spectacular season. He played a crucial role in Galle Marvels reaching the finals. With two fifties and a century, he finished up with 400 runs in 10 innings, becoming the highest run scorer of the tournament and only second player after Danushka Gunathilaka (476 runs in LPL 2020) to score 400+ runs in an edition of LPL.

Avishka Fernando (Jaffna Kings)

Avishka Fernando was yet again mightily effective, with 374 runs at an excellent strike rate of 163. He smashed five 50+ scores in 10 innings, becoming the first player in LPL history to hit five 50+ scores in a single edition.

Shadab Khan (Colombo Strikers)

Shadab, the Pakistan leggie, might have finally overcome his drought of wickets in competitions as he picked up 17 wickets in nine innings, the most for any bowler. He also registered the best figures in LPL 2024 - 4/10 against Jaffna Kings in the league stage. His economy of 6.5 was the best among bowlers with 30+ overs, and his bowling strike rate of 11.3 was the best in this edition and the third-best overall in any LPL season. He also picked up three 4+ wicket hauls, which is the most for a bowler in a single edition of LPL.

Matheesha Pathirana (Colombo Strikers)

The most expensive player in LPL history, Matheesha Pathirana, the slinging speedster, lived up to the price as he picked up 15 wickets in nine innings at an outstanding strike rate of 12.7. He became the only second pacer after Carlos Brathwaite (2022) to take two 4+ wicket hauls in an LPL edition.

Flops of LPL 2024

Nuwan Thushara (Dumbulla Sixers)

Nuwan Thushara, the slingy pacer, had a mediocre season. Like his team, Dambulla Sixers, who were underwhelming and finished at the bottom of the table, Thushara too did not make much impact as the pacer picked up just eight wickets in seven innings. His economy of 9.6 was on the higher spectrum as well.

Mohammad Nabi (Dambulla Sixers)

The captain of Dambulla Sixers, Mohammad Nabi, failed to lead the team from the front as he did not showcase his best form, picking just six wickets in eight games. He might have had one of the best economies in the tournament, 6.4, but his bowling strike rate of 26 made that economical figure meaningless.

Dilshan Madushanka (Dambulla Sixers)

Dilshan Madushanka, Lanka’s premium pacer, had a season to forget. The left-arm pacer picked up just 2 wickets across six games with a bowling average of 88 and a bowling strike rate of 64. He failed at one job that he was well known for - early breakthroughs.

Sadeera Samarawickrama (Colombo Strikers)

Sadeera Samarawickrama had a terrible season. The keeper-batter managed 163 runs in eight innings, averaging 23.3, managing just one 50+ score in the whole tournament.

Breakout performance in LPL 2024

Chamindu Wickramasinghe (Dambulla Sixers)

Amongst all the negatives that Dambulla Sixers had in LPL 2024, one bright positive that came out from the team was the young allrounder Chamindu Wickramasinghe, who had a great debut season. The left-handed batter coming out at #6 and lower scored 186 runs in six innings with two brilliant fifties. With the ball, the right-hand medium pacer picked up seven wickets at a strike rate of 12.6.
