Shami, Shreyas Iyer Drop In-Form Rachin Ravindra Twice In Two Overs
India ended up giving the in-form Rachin Ravindra two lives in the final
Indian seamer Mohammed Shami dropped two catches off his own bowling in the semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against Australia, and he followed it up with another drop catch in the final against New Zealand in Dubai on March 9 (Sunday).
Shami dropped in-form New Zealand opener Rachin Ravindra off his own bowling when he was on 28 off 20 balls. If that wasn’t enough, Shreyas Iyer dropped him again in the next over, this time off Varun Chakaravarthy’s bowling.
Opting to bat first, Ravindra got off to a flying start, hitting Hardik Pandya for two fours and a six in the fourth over. The left-hander then got two fours off Shami, who could have got his revenge in his next over but failed to grab onto the catch.
On the third delivery of the sixth over, Shami hit the length, and Ravindra chipped it straight back to him. The paceman, however, looked completely clueless and ended up making a mess of what was a relatively easy return catch. Shami also cut his hand while trying to take the catch, but got some tapping done and continued with his bowling.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma looked super disappointed with Shami’s effort and his disappointment only grew further when Iyer dropped another catch at deep mid-wicket. Ravindra tried to slog Chakaravarthy out of the park but couldn’t get the right connection. Iyer covered a bit of ground, dived, got both his hands, but failed to catch it.
Chakaravarthy, however, did pin Will Young right in front of the stumps in the same over and got India the first breakthrough. Young scored 15 off 23 and added 57 runs for the opening wicket.
That's not it; Ravindra, too, failed to capitalise on those chances and was undone by Kuldeep Yadav for 37 off 29.
