“I Don’t Know To Be Honest…”- Hapless Buttler Has No Answers After Another Loss

Buttler said that he would look to take inspiration from Joe Root to perform as non-captain

Jos Buttler, who was on the losing side even in his last match as England ODI captain and lost the game by a huge margin, said that he didn’t have the answers as to why his team were unable to click as a unit as they lost all three games in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, including the one against South Africa on March 1 (Saturday).

Speaking in the post-match presentation, he said, “It was really a disappointing performance, we were short of our mark today, so really disappointing. I don't know, to be honest, as a whole group, we are not getting the results and that takes away the confidence from us.”

Talking about what would happen if he is not the captain, Buttler said, “There is no doubt, the talent is there, we have all the elements to put together a great side. I'm sure Brendon and the guys at the top will formulate some plans.

Buttler further said that he would look to take inspiration from Joe Root, who has been brilliant even after leaving the captaincy. “Joe has been a shining light and a great example for us. After relinquishing his captaincy, he has played brilliantly and, hopefully, I can follow in his footsteps.”

Aiden Markram, who was stand-in captain of the South Africa side, was appreciative of both Marco Jasen and Heinrich Klaasen, both of whom did well with ball and bat respectively, to take the Proteas to the top of the points table in group B.

“[Jansen] has been huge for us. He takes wickets upfront, he finds different ways of doing so, and he pairs well with KG as well,” he said of the tall left-arm pacer, who took 3/39 at the top and broke the back of English batting.

Markram was also in awe of the kind of great form Klaasen had displayed for a year and a half. “He has been in a ridiculous sort of form for the last many months. He had a little niggle, but he never really left, he has been great for us,” he said.
