England Knocked Out Of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

It’s the second consecutive 50-over ICC event in which England have failed to cross the group stages

England have officially been KNOCKED OUT of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy on the back of their 8-run defeat against Afghanistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

The Afghanistan game was a must-win clash for the Three Lions, having been thrashed in their first game of the Champions Trophy against Australia, in which the Kangaroos chased down 352 with 15 balls to spare.

However, England were bowled out for 317 tonight, chasing 326, to bow out of the competition.

The contest started well enough for England, with Jofra Archer taking three wickets in the powerplay to reduce Afghanistan to 37/3. But Ibrahim Zadran then played one of the greatest knocks in modern ODI history (177 off 146 balls) to lift Afghanistan to 325/7.

In response, England lost wickets at regular intervals up front but were kept in the hunt by an outstanding century from Joe Root (120). But once Root departed in the 46th over, things unraveled quickly for England, who slipped to an 8-run defeat.

It’s the second consecutive 50-over ICC event in which England have failed to cross the group stages. At the 2023 ODI World Cup, they finished seventh, below both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

This could very well be the end of the captaincy stint of Jos Buttler, under whom England have now lost 13 of the 17 ODIs they’ve played since the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
