Hundred Women: Deepti shines but Smriti & other big guns disappoint

Here are some of the hits, misses and breakout performers from the Women's Hundred 2024

The fourth edition of the Women's Hundred was an excellent event which showcased some of the best women's cricket. The tournament, which started on July 23, saw quality cricket being played and the final saw the London Spirit beat Welsh Fire to win their first ever championship in The Hundred. Throughout the tournament, there were some outstanding performances and some duds as well.

Final: London Spirit beat Welsh Fire by 4 wickets

Hits of The Women’s Hundred 2024

Deepti Sharma (London Spirit)

Deepti Sharma had a spectacular season as she stepped up with both bat and ball, scoring 212 runs while taking eight wickets in eight games at an E.R of 6.85. Her MVP performance for the London Spirit played a key role in them winning their first championship. In the final, she came in as the finisher and won the title for the London Spirit, sealing victory in style with a six.

Nat Sciver Brunt (Trent Rockets)

English all-rounder Nat Sciver Brunt had another great season in the Hundred. Leading the Trent Rockets side, the all-rounder smashed 303 runs, becoming the first women to score 300+ runs in an edition of The Hundred. With the ball, Sciver picked up six wickets and showcased her all-round skills to the fullest.

Annabel Sutherland (Northern Superchargers)

Aussie sensation Annabel Sutherland, thus far in her young career, has been excellent in all formats, all tournaments and all conditions. The 22-year all-rounder had a superb season in The Hundred as she picked up 10 wickets at an economy of just 4.5 which was the best for a bowler bowling 120+ balls in the season. As a batter, she scored 212 runs at a terrific strike rate of 138.00, smashing 28 boundaries in total.

Linsey Smith (Northern Superchargers)

Linsey Smith finally managed to have a standout season in The Hundred. The left-arm spinner picked up the most wickets (15 wickets) in the tournament at an economy of just 6.4. Her excellence with the ball and Sutherland’s all-round brilliance almost took Superchargers to the knockouts.

Misses of The Women’s Hundred 2024

Smriti Mandhana (Southern Brave)

Team India vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was one of the major attractions in the Hundred 2024. However, she unfortunately ended up having a disappointing season. Smriti arrived late to the tournament due to Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, and by the time of her arrival, Southern Brave had already lost three games, putting her under pressure to perform straight away. The left-hander, though, failed to adapt to the conditions and managed just 60 runs in five games, crossing the 20-run mark just once.

Sophie Ecclestone (Manchester Originals)

World’s no.1 T20 bowler Sophie Ecclestone had a season to forget in The 2024 Hundred. Leading the Manchester Originals, she picked up only 5 wickets while going at an economy of 7.4. With the bat she managed 81 runs in seven innings, scoring single digit scores in four of the seven innings she batted. Her captaincy, too, was not impressive as the Originals won just three of their eight games, finishing sixth on the points table.

Richa Ghosh (Birmingham Phoenix)

Richa Ghosh, the big hitting Indian wicket-keeper, had a middling season with the bat for her new team Birmingham Phoenix. The slog over specialist was not able to connect big as she managed just 62 runs in four innings, managing to clear the ropes only twice. Her inability to score runs in crucial moments resulted in Birmingham scoring below par totals or failing to chase targets. Richa ended the season with a strike rate of 96.87.

Sophie Devine (Birmingham Phoenix)

The Kiwi stalwart Sophie Devine had a below par season in The Hundred 2024, by her high standards. The veteran all-rounder scored 119 runs in six games at a strike rate of 101, failing to score even one fifty. Her performance with the ball was hideous as she failed to take a wicket in 65 balls that she bowled across six games. It was the failures of Devine, Richa and others that led to Birmingham finishing at the penultimate position on the points table.

Breakout Performer in The Women’s Hundred 2024

Georgia Redmayne (London Spirit)

Australian batter Georgia Redmayne had a great comeback season in The 2024 Hundred. The 30-year old southpaw made a return after three years and became a vital part in London Spirit's championship winning campaign. She scored 229 runs in 10 games with two fifties. She scored four single digit scores in first five games, but bounced back spectacularly in the second half, registering scores of 66*, 53 & 34 in three of the last five games. In the final,  Redmayne top scored for the Spirit opening the batting.
