Who Is Vignesh Puthur, Kerala Spinner Debuting For MI Who's Played 0 T20s?

Puthur, today, is playing both his first IPL game and his first professional T20 game

One of the rarest occurrences in Indian Premier League (IPL) history has unfolded, with Mumbai Indians (MI) handing out a debut to a rookie with zero professional T20s to his name.

That’s right, 24-year-old Vignesh Puthur from Kerala is yet to play professional cricket at the highest level, any format, but has debuted for MI. Today against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk, Vignesh replaced Rohit Sharma in the second innings and walked in as MI’s impact substitute.

But who is Vignesh Puthur?

Well, the 24-year-old is a left-arm wrist-spinner hails from Kerala. Puthur has not played T20s for the Kerala state side, but he did feature in the 2024 edition of the Kerala Cricket League (KCL). He represented Alleppey Ripples and played four matches for the side in KCL 2024.

Puthur bowled thrice in KCL 2024 but did not impress in terms of numbers, taking just two wickets at an E.R of 11.4. However, he still caught the eye of the MI scouts and was thus bagged for his base price of INR 30 lakh at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.

Earlier this year, Puthur played in the 2025 DY Patil Cup. He represented the ‘Reliance 1’ and took two wickets at an E.R of 9.00.

Someone still extremely green, it is clear that MI have picked the youngster purely based on his potential.
