Why Are Teams Allowed To Play 5 Overseas Players in WPL but not IPL?

Delhi Capitals are playing five overseas players in their eleven in their WPL game against RCB

The Delhi Capitals are playing five overseas players in their eleven against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru today in the Women's Premier League - skipper Meg Lanning, Annabel Sutherland, Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce

However, the same franchise can play only four overseas players while participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

That’s because the teams are allowed to field five overseas players in the WPL if the fifth player belongs to an associate nation. Since Bryce is from Scotland, an associate nation, DC are operating within the legalities of the WPL system by playing her as the fifth overseas players.

That has allowed them to strengthen their team. Bryce is an aggressive batter, and she showed what she can do with the bat by hitting a crucial 21 off just 10 deliveries, helping the Capitals win their first encounter in the 2025 season by just two wickets.

Interestingly, Bryce’s elder sister Kathryn also played as the fifth overseas player for the Gujarat Giants last season. Tara Norris of the United States of America is the third associate player to feature in the WPL, apart from the Bryce sisters. However, that rule hasn't yet come into the IPL yet, with only as many as four overseas players allowed.
