WPL 2025: Huge Blow For UP Warriorz As Chamari Athapaththu Set To Exit Tournament Early
Athapaththu is yet to make an appearance for the Warriorz this season but played four games in the 2024 edition
UP Warriorz have been dealt a massive blow just days into the new Women’s Premier League (WPL) season, with news emerging that Chamari Athapaththu is set to exit the competition early in order to represent Sri Lanka.
Athapaththu is yet to make an appearance for the Warriorz this season but played four games in the 2024 edition, where she did not impress with the bat but took 3 wickets at an E.R of 6.86.
ESPNCricinfo reports that the left-handed batter will not be available for the Warriorz after February 26, and will link-up with the national team to prepare for the white-ball tour of New Zealand, which will see Sri Lanka play three ODIs and three T20Is against the White Ferns. The two-week-long tour will commence on March 4 at the McLean Park in Napier.
Athapaththu’s absence will come as a serious blow to the Warriorz’ depth, considering they are already without their skipper, Alyssa Healy, who is not participating in the ongoing edition of the WPL due to a foot injury. Deepti Sharma is leading the side in Healy’s absence.
UP Warriorz lost their first match of the season against Gujarat Giants by six wickets. They are slated to take on Delhi Capitals in their second game of the season on February 19 (Wednesday).
