Will Jofra Archer Play Tests vs India? Brendon McCullum Gives Major Update

Archer last played a Test for England over four years ago

After being successfully reintegrated into both the ODI and T20I sides, only one thing remains for Jofra Archer: to get back into the Test side.

After a stunning debut series in the Ashes in 2019, Archer was expected to turn into the ‘next great bowler’ for England in Tests, but a plethora of injuries has seen him play little to no red-ball cricket. It was more than four years ago that Archer last played a Test, and he’s since not even been in the conversations.

But the 29-year-old is currently as fit as he’s been since 2019, and England have a huge eight months ahead, playing a total of ten Tests against India (home) and Australia (away).

So, will we see Archer playing Test cricket this year?

“I would imagine Jof would be keen to play Test cricket this summer, yeah,” head coach Brendon McCullum said.

“We know how great Jofra is at the very top of his game and to have him back, fit and excited about playing is a real win for English cricket. We’ve got to make sure we’re always doing the right thing by Jof and understanding the risks involved, but I’m pretty sure he’s keen to play Test cricket.

“If you can add him to the battery of fast bowlers you’re trying to build then it only strengthens the squad. Overall, I’m really pleased to see where Jof’s at and it’s great to see him back playing and injury-free at the moment.”

England had a dismal 2025 Champions Trophy campaign, but Archer was a silver lining of sorts. He took six wickets in total, twice as many as any other English bowler. Interestingly, each of his six wickets came in the powerplay with the new ball, suggesting that he could be an absolute menace with the red ball, which will move significantly more, particularly in helpful conditions.
