The Hundred Men’s 2024 week 1 stars

Adam Zampa

It was an amazing bowling display by Australian Adam Zampa. The leg-break bowler gave Oval Invincibles incredible breakthroughs in both games to take the team to victory.

While he mostly got the tailenders in the first match against Birmingham Phoenix, Zampa ensured he was right on the money against Welsh Fire as he picked important wickets of Tom Kohler-Cadmore, skipper Tom Abell and David Willey.

With six wickets in two games, the 32-year-old has already set the bar for other spinners in The Hundred 2024.

Chris Green

Another Aussie spinner doing the damage in the first week of The Hundred Men’s 2024 was Green. Playing for the Trent Rockets in their season opener against the Northern Superchargers, Green scored a brisk 25* off just seven balls and picked up 3/14 in his 20-ball spell.

Sean Abbott

Since it was an Aussie's first week, the last name on the list is of another Aussie, Sean Abbott. Though Abbott was unable to score much and take wickets in the first match against Invincibles, he was economical, going for just 11 runs in his quota of 15 balls. He did even better in the next game and finished with figures of 4/14 as the Phoenix beat the other London-based side - Spirit by three wickets to open their account.

And those who failed to make it work

Moeen Ali

While the Aussies shone brightly in the first week, the hometown heroes were unable to perform up to the billing. Moeen Ali, the skipper of the Phoenix was one such player. He scored one and zero in his two innings as they kept looking for inspiration from their 36-year-old all-rounder skipper.

Jonny Bairstow

Bairstow’s poor rate of conversion continued in The Hundred 2024 as well. The wicket-keeper batter for Fire could only manage scores of 18 (10) and 5 (8) in his first two innings. He made no impact as a centrally contracted marquee English player for the Cardiff-based side.

Shimron Hetmyer

Deviating from the Englishmen towards the West Indians, Hetmyer could not live up to the expectations in the first week either. Playing for the London Spirit, the Guyanese batter could score only 5 (3) and 16 (16) in his two innings against Southern Brave and Phoenix respectively.
