RR captaincy has helped me grow and evolve as a cricketer: Samson

Samson is only 29 but he’s already led RR more times (61) than any other player, including the late great Shane Warne (56)

Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson has revealed that the experience of leading the franchise for a sustained period of time, in a league of the magnitude of the Indian Premier League, has helped him mature, grow and evolve as a cricketer.

Samson, who started his IPL career as an 18-year-old in 2013, was appointed the full-time skipper of the Royals ahead of the 2021 season. He’s since led the side to a final (in 2022) and has been extremely successful overall, with the team also making it to Qualifier 2 in IPL 2024.

Samson is only 29 but he’s already led RR more times (61) than any other player, including the late great Shane Warne (56).

Speaking ahead of the fifth T20I against Zimbabwe, the team India batter spoke about his experience of captaining in the IPL.

“I have been leading RR for the last four years. There have been some legends. I take care of legends and youngsters. You understand cricket a bit more,” Samson said, reported Cricbuzz.

“When you are a captain, you think about other players and other teams as well. I have been getting better.”

The 29-year-old did not play a single match in the 2024 T20 World Cup, but was, nevertheless, part of the squad that went all the way unbeaten.

Samson revealed that the players are still processing the emotions, and asserted that he feels ‘lucky’ to have been a part of a group that ended up winning the T20 World Cup.

“The emotions are still going through. The photos are still around. It was an unbelievable experience. I couldn't stop smiling. Very fortunate to be part of the team. Credit to everyone who contributed. It was a complete team effort.”

Samson is currently a part of India’s squad for the ongoing five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe that the Men in Blue are leading 3-1. He batted in the third T20I, where he scored 12* off 7 balls batting at No.5.
