No Marizanne Kapp, Khaka in Proteas women squad for England T20Is

Both the frontline South African pacers are rested in the T20is and will return for the ODIs that will begin right after

Marizanne Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka were rested for the upcoming home T20Is against England women. Meanwhile, the 18-year-old leg spinner Seshnie Naidu will have to miss out due to her school exams and later preparations for the Under-19 T20 World Cup in Malaysia in January.

South Africa replaced the experienced pacers with medium pacer Eliz-Mari Marx, the joint leading wicket-taker in Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Pro20 series and allrounder Nondumiso Shangase, who is yet to make a mark at the international level.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt, Nadine de Klerk, and Chloe Tryon will also be back from Australia for the series, where they are involved in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Faye Tunnicliffe will handle the wicketkeeper role after replacing Mieke de Ridder.

First of three T20Is will be played at East London on November 24. The three-match ODI series will start on December 4. The ODI series will be part of the ICC Women’s Championship (IWC), where the Proteas are currently placed fourth with 23 points. The top five teams, along with hosts India, will proceed to the ODI World Cup in 2025.

The tour also includes a one-off Test in Bloemfontein from December 15-18, for which the Proteas are yet to name a squad.

Interim Coach Dillon du Preez said that the team will look to continue the good work done during the T20 World Cup, where they made history by reaching back-to-back finals. He also backed the two new players (Marx and Shangase) in the squad to come good.

“Everyone is looking forward to the multi-format series against England, and we know it’s not going to be an easy one,” du Preez said in a statement released by CSA.

“We would like to have the same approach as we had in the recent T20 World Cup. We would still like to grow as a team and continue working on our T20 playing philosophy.

“So we decided to give one or two players a chance in the T20I series to prove themselves and also to give us a chance to look at what stock we have available and what skill we need to work on.”
