Mushfiqur Rahim Retires From ODIs After Challenging Last Few Weeks In CT 2025

The 37-year-old, who made his ODI debut in 2006 against Zimbabwe, scored 7795 runs, second most in the format for Bangladesh behind Tamim Iqbal

Mushfiqur Rahim, last of Bangladesh's first golden generation of cricketers, announced his retirement from ODI cricket, after a challenging last few weeks in Champions Trophy 2025.  The announcement from the wicketkeeper-batter and former captain came on March 5 (Wednesday).

"I am announcing my retirement from the ODI format as of today. Alhamdulillah for everything. While our achievements may have been limited on a global level, one thing is certain: whenever I stepped onto the field for my country, I gave more than 100% with dedication and honesty," Rahim said, announcing his retirement through his official Facebook page.

"The last few weeks have been very challenging for me, and I have come to realize that this is my destiny. Allah says in the Quran: "Wa tu'izzu man tasha' wa tu'zhilu man tasha'" [And He honours whom He wills, and He disgraces whom He wills](3:26). May Almighty Allah forgive us and grant righteous Iman to all," he added.

The 37-year-old, who made his ODI debut in 2006 against Zimbabwe, scored 7795 runs, second most for Bangladesh behind Tamim Iqbal. Rahim hit nine centuries, joint second-most alongside Shakib Al Hasan and only behind Tamim.

"Lastly, I would like to deeply thank my family, friends and my fans for whom I have played cricket for the last 19 years," he said.

As a wicketkeeper, he took 243 catches and affected 56 stumpings behind the stumps. One of the lasting memories of Rahim’s ODI cricket for India remains his half century against the Men in Blue in 2007 ODI World Cup, where Bangladesh caused a huge upset.
