We often associate MS Dhoni with being calm and collected. However, even the calmest of them have had incidents where they have lost their cool, making it to the headlines.
Back in IPL 2019, during a clash against Rajasthan Royals, CSK’s skipper Dhoni decided to walk out on the field to confront the on-field umpires about a no-ball decision. In that match, the on-field umpire Ulhas Gandhe started signalling no-ball before putting his hands down, stirring up controversy.
Eventually, the two umpires turned against going upstairs, declaring that as a legal delivery, which led to Dhoni walking out on the field. Reflecting back on this particular moment, Dhoni insisted that it was a ‘big mistake’ and still regrets it.
“Yes, lots of times - one of the IPL games, I just walked out to the field — That was a big mistake," Dhoni said in a promotional event by Mastercard India.
Eventually, it led to Dhoni being fined 50% of his match fees, as per Article 2.20 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, and triggered a whole debate about whether it was ethically right for a captain to do such a thing.
"Other than that also there have been instances where something gets triggered, because we play a sport where the stakes are very high. You're supposed to win every game, you have to manage a lot of things,” he added.
Dhoni had some advice for the other captains: When you are angry, try moving away from the situation and taking ‘deeper breaths’.
“That's why I say when you're not happy about something, when you're slightly angry or frustrated keep your mouth shut, get away for a while, try taking deeper breaths. It's quite similar to handling pressure, if you can cut yourself from the result aspect it helps. Your emotion should never really affect your decision making," the wicketkeeper-batter added.
