Huge injury scare for KKR as mega signing twists ankle and retires hurt in Ranji Trophy

KKR will be hoping for the injury to be nothing serious as they went all out for the 30-year-old at the mega auction

With just over a month and a half to go for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have a major injury scare to worry about as their INR 23.75 cr signing Venkatesh Iyer retired hurt in the Ranji Trophy clash between Madhya Pradesh and Kerala after twisting his ankle.

Iyer walked out to bat in the 18th over at No.6 after MP were reduced to 49/4 by Kerala, who won the toss and opted to bowl in Trivandrum. But he lasted just three balls and walked off the field in visible pain after twisting his ankle. Iyer was helped off the field by the MP physio and a few of the reserve players.

KKR will be hoping that the injury is not serious as they went all out for the 30-year-old in the auction. Iyer was the third-most expensive player at the IPL 2025 auction, behind Rishabh Pant (27 cr) and Shreyas Iyer (26.75 cr).

The left-hander played a key role in KKR winning IPL 2024, which is why the reigning champions went all-out for him at the IPL 2025 auction. He scored 370 runs at an average of 46.25 and strike rate of 158.80, and won many a game through his intent-filled strokeplay in the middle-order.
