England batter Harry Brook, who is the front-runner to replace Jos Buttler as England’s white-ball captain after a disastrous ICC Champions Trophy 2025 for the English team, could face a two-year ban from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after he pulled out of its 2025 edition on March 9 (Sunday).
The decision was first conveyed to the Board of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) by the England And Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and then relayed to Brook’s franchise, the Delhi Capitals.
This was the second season in a row that Brook pulled out of the IPL after having been picked up at the auction. In IPL 2024, he gave his reason for recovery after being mentally absorbed in his grandmother's death and pulled out just 10 days before the start of the tournament.
This time around, Brook fetched INR 6.25 Cr. Previously, he was with Delhi only when he pulled out and had to be replaced. Brook’s first season in the IPL was with Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2023.
According to the BCCI’s new diktat, “Any [overseas] player who registers for [an] auction and, after getting picked at the auction, makes himself unavailable before the start of the season will get banned from participating in the IPL/IPL auction for two seasons."
Brook made the final decision by posting on his X account, where he wrote an apology letter to the Delhi franchise and their supporters.
Brook fetched top money in the IPL 2025 auction after his great showing during England’s tour of Pakistan and New Zealand in late 2024.
