CPL Player Draft: Aaron Jones to Kings; Mayers picked by Patriots

Aaron Jones, the USA’s second-highest run-scorer at the 2024 T20 World Cup, was the headline signing at the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) player draft for the 2024 season. The 29-year-old was picked by St Lucia Kings on Monday (July 15) as a local player, courtesy of his Barbados passport. Jones made his List-A and first-class debut for Barbados in 2016 and 2017, respectively. Jones has previously been a part of CPL with St kitts and Nevis Patriots but didn't feature in the playing XI.

All six teams, including the newcomers Antigua and Barbuda Falcons, had announced their new signings and retentions well in advance before the player drafts. St Lucia filled four more spots, signing Khari Campbell, Johann Jeremiah, Mikkel Govia and Akeem Auguste. 

Among other high-profile signings, Kyle Mayers was the first pick for the 2021 champions, the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. The franchise then picked Mikyle Louis, Ryan John, and Veerasammy Permaul. 

Louis recently made his Test debut in the Lord’s Test against England which West Indies lost by an innings and 114 runs. Meanwhile, Permaul, a left-arm orthodox spinner has played nine Tests, seven ODIs and one T20I for West Indies, making SKNP the side that signed most international cricketers. 

The defending champions, Guyana Amazon Warriors pouched Matthew Nandu, Raymon Reifer (17 caps for West Indies) and Ronaldo Alimohamed.

Antigua & Barbuda Falcons added five players: Roshon Primus, Justin Greaves, Jahmar Hamilton, Teddy Bishop and Kofi James. Trinbago Knight Riders completed their squad with Nathan Edward and Shaquere Parris in the emerging player category. Kadeem Alleyne, Isai Thorne and Nathan Sealy went to Barbados Royals. 

The 2024 season of CPL will be played between August 30 and October 7.
