Bangladesh, on October 3 (Thursday), registered a win in the Women’s T20 World Cup after more than 10 years. 3836 days to be more precise. Nigar Sultana and her team defeated Scotland by 16 runs in the opening game of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 in Sharjah.
Bangladesh last won a T20WC game in April 2014 when they beat Ireland by 17 runs in Sylhet. They lost three and won two games in the 2014 edition of the tournament, where they made their first appearance.
Since then, Bangladesh have remained winless in the 20-over showpiece event. Post their win against Ireland, Bangladesh lost 16 games in a row. They didn’t win a single game in the 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2023 editions.
Talking about the match, Bangladesh posted a total of 119/7 in their 20 overs after opting to bat first. Shathi Rani (29 off 32) and Sobhana Mostary (36 off 38) did get some runs but their strike rates were below 100. Fahima Khatun (5-ball 10*) hit a couple of boundaries in the end to push Bangladesh closer to the 120-run mark.
Despite posting a below-par score, Bangladesh had the spin attack to keep Irish batters in check, and that’s exactly what happened. The likes of Nahida Akter, Rabeya Khan and Fahima Khatun bowled 12 overs between them and conceded only 60 runs.
The three of them also picked up a wicket each, restricting Ireland to 103/7. For Scotland, Sarah Bryce (52-ball 49*) was the only one to cross the 11-run mark.
Bangladesh will next take on England on October 5 in Sharjah, while Scotland will play West Indies on October 6 in Dubai.
