Ravichandran Ashwin Road: Chennai To Rename Street After Former India Cricketer

Ashwin joins the clubs of famous Indian sportspersons like Hockey legend PR Sreejesh and leg-spinner Anil Kumble to receive this honour

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has bestowed a special honour on the hometown hero Ravichandran Ashwin.  The city governing body has decided to name the residential street of the former Indian cricketer, Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in West Mambalam, as Ravichandran Ashwin Road.

According to the reports, the proposal was sent to the GCC by Carrol Ball Event and Marketing Company, which is owned by Ashwin. It requested that either Arya Street or Ashwin’s residential street be named after the renowned cricketer. The GCC recognised the request and named Ashwin’s residential street after him.

Ashwin is the best cricketer Chennai and Tamil Nadu have ever given to the nation and is the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests. He is set to feature for the local side in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chennai Super Kings, in 2025 after beginning his IPL career with the same team.

Ashwin recently retired from international cricket in the middle of the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia. He has also co-written his autobiography, “I Have the Streets,” with Siddharth Monga, which talks in detail about Ashwin’s relationship with street cricket and Chennai in general.

Notably, Hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh and former Indian Test captain Anil Kumble already have streets named after them in their respective hometowns.
