IPL 2025 Venue Analysis: Kolkata Set For Another Season Of Run Fests, Big Scores & Batting Milestones
Here is a breakdown of the Eden Gardens venue in IPL in recent years
The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will be played across 13 venues in India. Matches will happen in all four corners of the country: Dharamsala in the North, Chennai in the South, Ahmedabad in the West, and Guwahati in the East. Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, and Delhi Capitals are the three teams with two home venues.
Kolkata will be hosting the most games in IPL 2025 alongside Hyderabad with seven league games and two games in the playoffs, including the final on 25th May. The venue has been 50:50 for teams batting first and chasing in the last two seasons. The average first innings score of 195 tells the ground can potentially deliver run-fests.
Pacers have been hammered all over the Eden Gardens as they have an economy of 10.8 compared to spinners, who have conceded 8.6 per over. But, the bowling SR is slightly better than spinners with pacers striking every 19 deliveries and spinners striking once every 20 balls.
BATTERS HAVE HAD RUN FESTS AT THE EDEN
In the previous two seasons, Kolkata has been the batters' favourite ground as they have hammered bowlers left, right and centre. It has the highest run rate for a venue in IPL since 2023.
200+ totals have been a regular occurrence in Kolkata, which has seen the joint most 200+ totals in IPL over the last couple of seasons.
The Pacers have been taken to the cleaners in Kolkata as they have smashed at a run rate of 10.8, which is the highest they have conceded at a venue in IPL in the last two years.
SIX-HITTING IS AT ITS PEAK IN PP & SLOG OVERS
Batters have gone berserk against bowlers in powerplay as Kolkata has seen 76 sixes being hammered during the powerplay in the IPL since 2023, which is the most at a venue.
The slog overs at the Eden Gardens have been a display of batting dominance. With the likes of Andre Russell, Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh handling slog overs for KKR, they certainly have delivered, as it is the only venue to see over 100 sixes being hit in the final five overs.
WRIST SPINNERS HAVE HAD THE MOST SUCCESS
Wrist spinners have had a terrific time in Kolkata. In the last editions, they have taken 45 wickets, the most at a venue. Varun Chakaravarthy, Suyash Sharma, and other visiting wrist spinners have had good success in the IPL since 2023.
The visiting wrist spinners have done better in Kolkata than the KKR wrist spinners. They have taken almost the same number of wickets, bowling 25 overs less. They have a better economy and bowling SR than KKR spinners.
