PNG’s poor start
After the rain delayed the start of the match, Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to field first. Tim Southee (2/11) and Lockie Ferguson (3/0) were on the money from the first ball itself, and the strongest batters of PNG - Tony Ura (1 off 2) and Asad Vala (6 off 16) - were dismissed cheaply.
Flash who? It’s Lockie Ferguson!
Four overs. Four maidens. Three wickets.
PNG batters had no answer to Ferguson’s pace as he didn’t give a single run off the bat and also picked up three wickets. This was the most economical spell in T20 World Cup history.
Sese Bau and Charles Amini’s gumption fails
Bau played almost two full overs from Ferguson, but his bat only met thin air. Amini, meanwhile, scored 17 runs with two fours before Ferguson consumed him as well. Amini was the top scorer of PNG’s innings as they folded out for just 78.
Kabua Morea impresses
Left-arm medium-pacer Morea bowled 14 deliveries, gave just two runs, and picked up two of the three Kiwi wickets to fall. Despite defending only 78, his skills troubled the much better team.
New Zealand finished it in haste
It took only 12.2 overs for the Kiwis to chase down the paltry total. Devon Conway scored 35 runs in 32 balls. Later, Kane Williamson (18 off 17) and Dary Mitchell (19 off 12) polished off the remaining runs with ease.
