5 factors behind Uganda's historic victory over PNG

The Cricket Cranes registered their first-ever World Cup win, in a low-scoring encounter in Guyana

Uganda's immaculate bowling

After taking a pounding against Afghanistan, the Ugandan bowlers were on the money against Papua New Guinea (PNG) with their lines and lengths, with 30.4% of their deliveries hitting the wickets. They came in with a plan and executed it to perfection.

Nsubuga's historic spell

Frank Nsubuga (2/4) ensured being only the second-oldest player to debut in T20 World Cup was not his only achievement today. He bowled a tight spell giving away just four runs and also picked up the wickets of Hiri Hiri (15) and Charles Amini (5).

PNG pull things back in powerplay

After putting up just 77 on the board, PNG bowlers gave their team a superb chance by picking up four wickets in the powerplay. Alei Nao (2/16) Norman Vanua (2/19) and Chad Soper (1/13) shared the wickets between them in the first six to give Uganda a scare.

Crucial drops

With such a low target to defend, it's vital to hang on to your catches. PNG found that out the hard way. Charles Amini, who is one of the best fielders in the world, dropped a sitter to let Riazat Ali Shah (33) off the hook.

That would have had Uganda at 35/6 and effectively sealed the game for PNG. If that was not enough, Vanua dropped another sitter with Uganda six down and only five away from victory. Riazat made full use of the dropped catch early on and went on to score a match-winning 33 off 56. His 35-run stand with Juma Miyagi (13) too proved to be crucial.

Too Wide

PNG bowled as many as 15 wides against Uganda. Given that they had set Uganda just 78, that proved too costly in the end, as they succumbed to a three-wicket loss. Alei Nao and Norman Vanua bowled seven wides apiece, while fellow fast bowler Chad Soper bowled one.

PNG may have eked out a win, had their bowlers been a tad more disciplined
