It has taken only two games for young Archie Vaughan, the son of former England skipper Michael Vaughan, to leave a serious mark at the professional level. On September 11 (Wednesday), the 18-year-old picked up his maiden five-wicket haul (6/102) in the second innings of the clash between Somerset and Surrey in Taunton.
It took less than 24 hours for the teenage sensation to build on that feat as on the final day of the aforementioned clash on September 12 (Thursday), Vaughan took 5/38 in the fourth innings to take a maiden 10-fer in first-class cricket and bowl Somerset to a famous victory.
Among Vaughan’s scalps in the second innings were England internationals Rory Burns, Dom Sibley and Ben Foakes. He went a step ahead in the fourth innings and got the huge scalp of Shakib Al Hasan.
Bowling from around the wicket, the off-spinner got the left-hander to nick one straight to Lewis Gregory at slip. Shakib tried to play a good length delivery from Vaughan off the back foot but ended up getting a thick edge that carried comfortably.
As it turned out, the 18-year-old ended up bowling a marathon spell for the ages. In the fourth innings on the final day, he delivered 32 overs and conceded just 38 runs, bowling a staggering 15 maidens. His figures read 32-15-38-5.
What’s more, he and his partner-in-crime, Jack Leach, were responsible for all 20 wickets in the clash, with Leach accounting for 9 wickets overall. Leach, in the fourth innings, registered figures of 37-24-37-5 as Somerset bowled Surrey out for 109, defending 221.
