Timeline: Rishabh Pant triggers a collapse for India at MCG

India went from 121/4 to 155 all-out to surrender the Melbourne Test against Australia

It all started with a long hop.

An innocuous long hop from Travis Head triggered a shameful collapse for India. If you missed out on that last session, thinking that, okay, the game will end in a draw, here’s how that last session panned out:

Rishabh Pant c Marsh b Head 30 (104)

Out of nowhere, Travis Head has prized out the biggest wicket for Australia with a LONG HOP. It was there to be hit, it was there to be smashed into the third tier but what has Rishabh Pant done here? Found the fielder in the deep, Mitchell Marsh takes the opportunity with both hands.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid

Ravindra Jadeja c Carey b Boland 2 (14)

One brings two. Scott Boland is back into the attack and gets the ball to do all sorts of things. He’s the local hero, the legend, and what a seed to get Ravindra Jadeja out. Australia are back in the game out of nowhere.

Nitish Kumar Reddy c Smith b Lyon 1 (5)

Lovely bowling from Nathan Lyon. He’s drawn Nitish Kumar Reddy on the front foot, and he’s got that edge. What a catch from Steven Smith; he’s taken it superbly. India lose another, and this is a collapse that will go down in history. 15 minutes of bad play.

Yashasvi Jaiswal c Carey b Cummins 84 (208)

CONTROVERSIAL!

Joel Wilson feels this is not out, but Australia are up and running. They are celebrating. They believe that they have FINALLY GOT THEIR MAN YASHASVI JAISWAL OUT! Jaiswal is not sure if there was an edge but Travis Head is sure that it has come off the glove.

The first highlight shows that there’s a clear deflection. What does the snicko say? There’s nothing on the snicko; there’s absolutely nothing. What will the third umpire, Sharfuddoula Saikat, do about this? There’s a clear deflection but nothing on the snicko.

THIS IS GOING TO GO DOWN IN HISTORY.

Akash Deep c Head b Boland 7 (17)

You just can’t defeat Boland and Australia at the ‘G, can you?

When neither Mitchell Starc nor Nathan Lyon couldn’t get them out, Boland walked into the attack and got the right-hander out with a delivery that jagged back. Yet again, there was controversy because this time around, the snicko shows that there’s an edge, but in real-time, there’s nothing.

Jasprit Bumrah c Smith b Boland 0 (8)

Jasprit Bumrah can’t do it all for India. The man dragged India into a winning position at 91/6 but now walks off without damage with an eight-ball duck. Bumrah is walking off, shaking his head.

Australia just need one wicket. India have collapsed from 121/4 to 154/9, this is some collapse.

Mohammed Siraj lbw b Lyon 0 (2)

Big appeal, a classic off-break from Lyon, and what has Mohammed Siraj done here? He’s missed that ball in front of the stumps. That’s plumb. That’s gone. Siraj has reviewed it, but to no avail, India have lost dramatically here.

India have finally lost at the iconic MCG, Australia have finally trumped India at the venue.
