We are again back at the CDC Awards, this time in a category that world cricket isn’t ready for. While all of these awards are purely works of fiction, you will see a lot of familiar names; some even play for the national teams. If it contains your favourite team or player, don’t worry, feel blessed.
Let’s get into the awards:
Gabba ka Ghamand award
Winner: India losing against NZ
You remember Toota hai Gabba ka ghamand, don’t you? Two years later, New Zealand did one better, Toota hai India ka ghamand, breaking a 12-year-old unbeaten streak.
Let’s get Vivek Razdan himself to deliver this award, and it is only fitting that Gambhir will receive it.
Starboy award
Winner: Harry Brook
Imagine this song on the loop and watching Harry Brook destroy Pakistan and New Zealand. Without wasting any more time, we have Brook here receiving his award. Look out, Pakistan.
Chin Tapak Dam Dam award
Winner: DSP Mohammed Siraj
One publication explained the meme as “Emerging seemingly out of nowhere, this nonsensical string of words has taken the internet by storm. "
That’s exactly what Siraj has done this year, ‘Chin Tapak Dam Dam’.
Big Dawg award
Winner: Afghanistan
184M views. Like how Hanumankind sent the entire world into a spiral, Afghanistan did something similar, knocking New Zealand and Australia out of the T20 World Cup 2024. So, there he is, Rashid Khan receiving the award, /wait a minute…… (uh), get it how you live it (uh), Ten toes in when we standin' on business, big stepper, underground methods/, Afghanistan get the most, not the lesser.
Highway of the year
Winner: Multan
Cue, I’m on a highway to hell heaven. That’s exactly how Joe Root and Brook thought when they saw Multan and absolutely cooked - 823/7d.
Let’s give the PCB a fitting award: a bag of cement to construct the perfect cricket venue.
Test cricketer of the year
Winner: Rohit Sharma
619 runs this year.
But what’s lying underneath is that Rohit has done that in 26 innings, averaging 24.76. When the team needed him the most, against New Zealand at home, Rohit was at his sensational best, averaging 15.16. A high score of 52 and a 0-3 whitewash, oh man, can a Test year get any better?
He's started the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with scores of 3, 6, 10, 3, 9.
Coach of the year
Winner: Gautam Gambhir
How do you take a winning team and make them better?
Well, you don’t. That’s what Gautam Gambhir did. He didn’t make the team better, he made them the worst Indian team to have played at home, courtesy of a 0-3 whitewash at home. How is it even possible to lose against New Zealand at home?
Don’t challenge Gautam Gambhir. He can do it all. Let’s welcome Tom Latham to give the award to Gambhir himself. Oops, he isn’t here.
Year of the Rooster
Winner: Jake Fraser-McGurk
“Year of the Rooster are said to be talented, brave and self-reliant”.
No wonder Jake Fraser-McGurk deserves this award. Not only is he talented, but his brave show at the Indian Premier League to smash Jasprit Bumrah is possibly one of the highlight reels of the year. Not to forget his hairstyle, which reminds everyone of a rooster. He even paid respect to the rooster with two ducks against Scotland.
Cue “Rooster is back” music, and welcome Fraser-McGurk.
Chill Guy award
Winner: Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya’s biggest moment of 2024 came in the T20 World Cup final.
You remember his reaction after the World Cup win? That’s really where this chill guy meme started.
Gandhi award
Winner: Travis Head
You might be wondering why this award is titled ‘Gandhi’. I’m sure you are a little confused, but let me clear the air for you. Who’s Gandhi? Father of India.
Who is Travis Head? Well, father of India. Hence, for the Gandhi Award, we will have Rohit present this award to Head. Is anything more fitting than this?
Best timed Insta post of the year
Winner: Ajinkya Rahane
On October 17, when India got all out for 46, their lowest total at home, Ajinkya Rahane dropped the mic on Instagram. The former Indian skipper posted a video titled “Ready to strike”.
You can’t make this up. You can’t; you can try with the best of writers, but such timing from Rahane just shows his class. So, let’s give this award to Rahane on Instagram for the best-timed post of the year.
Student of the year
Winner: Prithvi Shaw
Disco Deewane, aha, aha. That’s exactly what Prithvi Shaw has been doing this year. He’s been scoring against minnows or doing reels with “Taambdi Chaamdi”. Like the movie Student of the Year, where they do everything except be a good student, here’s the award dedicated to Shaw.
Hopefully he doesn’t post an Instagram story. We don’t want a divine intervention.
Moon-ball
Winner: Mahedi Hasan
Maybe you don’t remember. We are not blaming you. But you have to watch it because this is cinema, in what was one of the best (read funny) plays of the year. Bangladesh’s seasoned professional Mahedi Hasan delivered a moon ball (quite literally), only for the batter to find the fielder.
So, here’s the off-spinner doing his moonwalk while receiving an award that looks like a moon. That’s just the Kookaburra ball that has been demolished during an SRH game in Hyderabad, which we have shaped like a moon cause no budget.
