Ashwin announced his sudden retirement from all formats in the middle of the Border Gavaskar Trophy following the drawn Test in Brisbane, leaving everyone in shock. He ends his career with 765 international wickets, the most for an Indian after Anil Kumble (956).
Karthik's excellent performances in the IPL saw him return to the side for the 2022 T20 World Cup at the age of 37. However, with there being slim chances of making a comeback to the Indian side, Karthik announced his retirement from all forms. However, he will continue to play in the T20 circuit around the world, with his first top being at SA20, where he will represent the Paarl Royals in 2025 SA20.
Dhawan has had plenty of memorable moments in the Indian jersey. Be it his consistency at ICC events or his massive century on Test debut, the southpaw entertained the world with his stupendous strokeplay. Dhawan ends with over 10,000 runs for India across formats in 269 matches but will be seen participating in T20 leagues across the world. He has already started his journey as a freelancer at the Nepal Premier League (NPL) recently.
Arguably one of the best opening batters across formats, Warner called it a day following the T20 World Cup 2024. Warner ends his career with close to 19,000 international runs in 383 matches for Australia.
However, he will continue playing in the T20 circuit worldwide, leading Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League.
Dean Elgar's 12-year international career ended following the Cape Town Test against India in January this year. And what better way to do it than leading your country? While the result did not go South Africa's way, Elgar can certainly be proud of what he has achieved with the bat for the Proteas, clamming over 5,000 runs, including 14 centuries.
13 of those 14 tons came as an opening batter, the most after Gary Kirsten (14), Herschelle Gibbs (14) and Graeme Smith (27). He continues to ply his trade at the County Championship, turning up for Essex this season.
The greatest fast bowler to play this sport, James Anderson, finally called it quits earlier this year after picking up 704 wickets. He is just one of just three bowlers to pick up over 700 wickets in the format. While Anderson's limited-overs career for England ended in 2015, he has since then, transformed himself into an all-time great in Tests.
Anderson is also England's highest wicket-taker in ODIs, with 269 scalps, and finishes with 991 wickets in international cricket overall. He partnered superbly with Stuart Broad, who retired last year with 604 wickets.

Shakib Al Hasan (Tests + T20Is)
Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is the only player on this list to have retired from both formats — Tests and T20Is. His last match in T20Is came at the T20 World Cup, and his final Test came against India in Kanpur. He wanted to play the Test series against South Africa at home, but his allegiance to the overthrown ruling party did not allow him to return home.
Shakib could retire from ODIs after the Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan and the UAE in February-March next year. Regardless of what he achieves in the remaining matches, Shakib will go down as an all-time great in Bangladesh.
No Bangladesh player has taken more wickets than Shakib (712) in international cricket. And as far as his runs are concerned, only two players - Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim - have scored more than him (14,730).

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli & Ravindra Jadeja (T20Is)
With a triumphant T20 World Cup 2024 campaign, three squad members called it a day in the shortest format. Rohit walked away as the leading run-getter in the format with 4,231 runs, while Kohli is just two places below him at 4,188 runs.
While Jadeja may not have had the sort of impact he would have liked in T20Is for India; he added balance to the side with his ability to bat and bowl, besides being a gun fielder. However, the good news for the fans is that all three of them will continue to feature in the IPL and at the international level, they still have a few more matches left in them.
Tim Southee (Tests)
New Zealand pacer Tim Southee is one of New Zealand's most prolific wicket-takers after Richard Hadlee. He has 391 wickets, the most after Hadlee (431).
However, he will continue to feature for New Zealand in ODIs and T20Is, most likely to participate in the Champions Trophy 2025 next. Until then, he will continue plying his trade in T20 leagues. He was recently unveiled as Sharjah Warriors' skipper in the ILT20.
