Sanju Samson registers unwanted feat after record-breaking ton

Samson, who had become the first Indian to record consecutive T20I centuries, is now only the second batter to score a duck after two tons in a row in T20Is

Sanju Samson, who was on cloud nine after a record-breaking century in the first T20I against South Africa in Kingsmead, Durban, was brought to earth by Marco Jansen as he clean bowled the right-hander for a duck in the second T20I at St George’s Park in Gqeberha on November 10 (Sunday).

Samson, who had become the first Indian and fourth batter in the world to record consecutive T20I centuries after his ton in Kingsmead, became only the second batter to score a duck after two consecutive centuries in T20Is. He equalled South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw for the unwanted record.

Incidentally, Rossouw’s duck came against India after he had smashed consecutive centuries against India and Bangladesh. The Proteas man had not batted in one game in between these three matches, thus Samson is the only batter to have batted in three consecutive innings and gotten out for a duck after consecutive tons in T20Is.

The 29-year-old, who would turn 30 tomorrow (November 11), also became the second batter after Johnson Charles to score a duck after a century in a series against South Africa.

From India’s perspective, Samson joined the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rohit Sharma and Abhishek Sharma as the fourth batter to score a hundred and a duck in the same T20I series.
