Rohit Sharma To Continue As India's Test Captain: Reports
The batter had stood down from the SCG Test against Australia earlier this year due to lack of runs
After leading India to the Champions Trophy title, Rohit Sharma is expected to be retained as the Test captain, according to a report by Indian Express. This move will see Rohit taking charge of the side in the five-match Test series against England, which begins after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
Rohit struggled for runs in the away Tests against Australia and as a result, stood down from the final Test in Sydney, with Jasprit Bumrah taking charge.
According to the report, Rohit has the backing of the BCCI and is keen to continue as captain. “He has shown what he can do. Every stakeholder feels that he is the right candidate to lead the Indian side for the tour of England. Rohit too has expressed his eagerness to keep playing red-ball cricket,” a source told Indian Express.
Rohit quashed any retirement rumours after winning the Champions Trophy but, at the same time, did not commit to playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Right now, I’m playing really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice. I can’t really say 2027 because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open,” he had said, according to the ICC portal.
“It’s something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there’s so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don’t want to leave this team. The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them."
Rohit has led India to two ICC tournament wins in 10 months. He also led his country to the ODI World Cup final in 2023 and the World Test Championship (WTC) final before that. However, in Tests, the 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home and a 3-1 defeat in Australia have put pressure on the 37-year-old, and there have been calls for him to be dropped from the Test team.
