Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairperson Mohsin Naqvi is expected to take over as the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president later this year, replacing BCCI secretary Jay Shah. The ACC presidentship is awarded on a rotational basis and is currently with the BCCI. Shah got an extension in January 2024 to continue for another year.
Earlier this year, Naqvi was elected as the PCB chairman for a three-year term. He is the first to be elected after Ramiz Raja was sacked from the post with, with Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf appointed head of interim boards in the intervening months.
“When the ACC meets later this year, it will confirm that Naqvi will be the next president for a two-year term... When [Jay] Shah steps down, the PCB chief will take over,” the source told PTI.
A meeting is believed to have been held with several members of the ACC to reach a consensus on Naqvi taking over the reins. The new president is expected to take on the responsibilities for the Asia Cup in 2025 (T20I) in India and the 2027 edition in Bangladesh (ODI). This will be in addition to Naqvi's current responsibilities of ensuring that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, hosted by Pakistan, goes on without a glitch.
Whether India will attend the event has yet to be determined. They have yet to provide PCB with consent, which has further added to PCB's woes. They have not toured Pakistan since 2008. However, Pakistan toured India for the ODI World Cup last year, where they crashed out in the group stages, having won just three-fourths of their nine matches.
