Meet the former teammate of SKY, Shreyas Iyer & others playing in BPL 2024/25
He represented Mumbai for five seasons and is now playing for Dhaka in the ongoing BPL season
There is an Indian player currently playing in the ongoing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), and he has been a former teammate of Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur and other Indian superstars.
Wondering who?
Well, it’s none other than 30-year-old Shubham Ranjane, who was a regular in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team between 2016 and 2020. Ranjane, a middle-order batter and also a part-time medium pacer, is currently representing Dhaka Capitals in the ongoing edition of the BPL.
How is Ranjane eligible to play in the BPL?
Ranjane is eligible to play in the BPL because he retired from Indian cricket and shifted base to the United States three years ago.
He first represented the Seattle Thunderbolts in Minor League Cricket and then represented the Seattle Orcas in both the 2023 and 2024 editions of Major League Cricket (MLC). He played four matches for the Orcas in MLC 2024 where he shared the dressing room with the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Quinton de Kock, Ryan Rickelton and others.
Has Ranjane played international cricket for USA yet?
No, but in his own words, the 30-year-old aims to play international cricket for USA.
“My aim is to perform well in the Major League. I am pretty confident that I will play for the USA national team. I have got an NOC from the BCCI to play in different franchise leagues as well,” he told mid-day in an interview in 2023.
How has Ranjane been faring in BPL 2024/25?
Ranjane has played three matches in BPL 2024/25 so far and has scored 34 runs at an average of 17.00 and a strike rate of 141.66. In addition, he has taken 3 wickets at an expensive economy rate of 11.55.
How did Ranjane fare for Mumbai in domestic cricket?
Ranjane posted solid numbers for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, scoring 513 runs at an average of 39.46, posting 4 fifties in total.
But he had middling numbers in white-ball cricket, averaging 15.5 in T20s and 70.9 in List A cricket. In 50-over cricket, he struck at just 70.9 in the eight innings he batted.
Ranjane also played one season for Goa (in 2021/22) and registered poor numbers in both 50-over cricket and Ranji Trophy. However, he had a very good Syed Mushtaq Ali campaign in 2021, scoring 167 runs at an average of 55.67 and strike rate of 116.
Has Ranjane ever played in the IPL?
No, but he was part of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad in IPL 2019. He was purchased for his base price of 20 lakh by the Royals.
