Liton Das ruled out of Asia Cup 2023; Anamul Hoque named replacement

Anamul Haque had last played an ODI in the home series against India in December

In a massive blow for Bangladesh, star batter Liton Das has been ruled out of the Bangladesh squad for the ensuing Asia Cup 2023 that starts later today, August 30, in Multan. Bangladesh, slated to play their first match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele on Thursday, will have 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Anamul Haque Bijoy as his replacement.

According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Liton was diagnosed with viral fever, and his body weakness was so severe that he had to be ruled out of the tournament. It is unclear if he will return to the squad after recovering. Anamul Haque had last played an ODI in the home series against India in December.

“He (Anamul) has been in the runs in domestic cricket, and we have continued to monitor him in the Bangladesh Tigers programme. He was always in our consideration,” said Minhajul Abedin, Chairman of the National Selection Panel.

“Due to Litton’s unavailability, we needed a top-order batter who could keep wicket, and Anamul got the nod.”

According to Asia Cup schedule 2023, Bangladesh have been clubbed alongside Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in Group B. After playing their first game on Thursday in Pallekele, they will fly to Lahore for the next group game against Afghanistan.
