Jasprit Bumrah To Miss IPL 2025? MI Head Coach Jayawardene Provides Major Update
Bumrah has not played any cricket since January due to a back injury he suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene claimed that ‘everything is going well so far’ in terms of Jasprit Bumrah’s recovery, but admitted that, as it stands, there is no clarity as to whether the speedster will be back playing competitive cricket again.
Bumrah has not played any cricket since January due to a back injury he suffered during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney against Australia, but it was reported that the pacer would return to action in the first week of April.
However, Jayawardene clarified that Bumrah has ‘just’ started his rehabilitation.
"[Bumrah] has just started his progress. We have to wait and see what their [BCCI medical team] feedback is on him," Jayawardene said, reported ESPNCricinfo.
"At the moment, everything is going well. But, obviously, it is on a day-to-day basis. He is in good spirits. Not having him is a challenge. He is one of the best bowlers in the world and he has been a fantastic pro for us for many years.”
The MI head coach further claimed that Bumrah’s absence will provide an opportunity for others to step up. The last time Bumrah missed the IPL was back in 2023, and that season, MI went on to reach the playoffs, losing to Gujarat Titans (GT) in Qualifier 2.
"We'll have to wait or find an opportunity for someone else to step up. That's how I see it. It gives us an element of trying a few things and see how things work. The early part of the season allows us to do that."
In IPL 2024, Bumrah took 20 wickets at an E.R of 6.48, but MI still finished bottom of the table. It was the second time they finished bottom of the table in the competition’s history.
