Ireland all-rounder Simranjit Singh, aka Simi Singh, is currently admitted at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon, Haryana, after an acute liver failure. He is currently in need of a liver transplant.
The Mohali-born player played Under-15 and Under-17 cricket for Punjab but later moved to Ireland for career opportunities in the hospitality industry. There, he joined the Malahide Cricket Club, which initiated his journey in Irish cricket and led to him playing 35 ODIs and 53 T20Is for Ireland.
"Some five to six months back, when he was in Dublin, Ireland, Simi developed a strange fever that kept coming and going,” his father-in-law Parvinder Singh told the Times of India.
“He got himself examined there, but nothing conclusive came out in the check-ups. The medical professionals there said that they couldn't find the underlying cause and therefore they wouldn't start medication…The process was getting delayed, and his health was deteriorating, so we decided to get him treated in India for 'better medical attention'.
“But his health kept deteriorating, and the PGI physicians detected that he had developed acute liver failure. They advised us to take Simi to Medanta, Gurugram because there was a high probability of him slipping into a coma, after which a transplant wouldn't be possible. We came to Medanta on September 3.”
Simi is now awaiting a liver transplant, which will be donated by his wife Agamdeep Kaur.
"Thankfully, Simi's blood group is AB+, which means he is a universal receiver. The doctors say that matching with his wife won't be a problem. The transplant is likely to be performed very soon, and the doctors are positive that the outcome will be in Simi's favour and will give him a new lease of life.”
Simi has been one of Ireland’s leading cricketers, scoring more than 1000 runs in List A and T20 cricket. The 37-year-old off-spinner has taken 39 ODI and 44 T20I wickets. He was also one of the first cricketers to get a full-time contract from Ireland Cricket, which they first introduced in 2020.
