Gerald Coetzee ruled out of SA20 2025 but remains in contention for CT 2025
Coetzee, not initially named in South Africa’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025, was touted to replace Anrich Nortje, who was ruled out with injury
South Africa fast bowler Gerald Coetzee was officially ruled out of the SA20 2025 on January 19 (Sunday), after complaining of continuous strain in his left hamstring. Coetzee, who had been injured before the start of the league, played only one game for the Joburg Super Kings (JSK).
Now, he will miss the entire league. However, he is still in contention to replace Anrich Nortje, another fast bowler who got injured just recently. Nortje, who was mostly injured during the South African summer, was named in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad to be played in Pakistan.
But later on, he complained of a back injury and was ruled out of the ICC tournament.
“Joburg Super Kings fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has sustained a left hamstring strain and therefore will take no further part in Betway SA20.The 24-year-old will undergo further medical assessments and rehabilitation. An update will be provided in due course,” SA20 League said in a statement.
Earlier, ESPNcricinfo reported that South Africa's white-ball coach Rob Walter had confirmed that the management was looking at Coetzee as Nortje’s replacement. Coetzee was almost there to make it to the squad in the first go, but Nortje’s experience got picked over his robust energy.
Now, if Coetzee also does not recover in time, South Africa would have to look at the likes of youngster Kwena Maphaka and latest debutant Corbin Bosch.
