Right then, that is it from this one-sided affair as the tournament kicks off with the champions suffering defeat. Till then, it's a goodbye and cheers!
Rovman Powell the victorious skipper of Jamaica Tallawahs will say a few words. He says it was important to start with a win and gather momentum. Adds that it depends on the surface, on how they want to play. Adds that they try to blend power with finesse. Applauds Brandon King's performance and claims that Kennar Lewis played a good supporting role. Informs that he didn't use Fabian Allen with the ball because the opposition had many left-handers.
Dwayne Bravo the captain of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots is up next for a chat. He says they can't afford to give them so many chances in the field. Reckons that it was tough luck and with a quick turnaround, he hopes that they rectify their mistakes. Adds that he is happy with how Jaden Carmichael performed with the ball and on the field.
Brandon King is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his 89 runs of just 57 balls. He says he is happy to play the first game for his home franchise. Admits it was a slow start but he is happy in the end with his inning. Adds that he just told Kennar Lewis to keep his calm. Tells that they had wickets in hand so they took their chances. Claims that the pitch was tough to bat on and they got a good total on the board.
Time for the presentation...
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots did not only have a poor outing with the bat. It started all wrong for them as their slower bowlers were taken out of the park by the Jamaica Tallawahs openers. Their troubles were compounded by some poor fielding as they dropped catches regularly. Had they been more clinical on the field, they may have been able to restrict their opponents to a lower score. Brandon King and Kennar Lewis put on a 100-plus partnership for the opening wicket, the highest for their team in the tournament ever. That set up the game for the bowlers to come out and seal a comfortable victory.
Jamaica Tallawahs came out and bowled with discipline. They never let their opponents off the hook, chipping in with wickets at regular intervals. This was a complete bowling performance with all the bowlers maintaining control throughout the innings. They caught well unlike their opponents and Nicholson Gordon was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets in his fiery spell of fast bowling. The spinners were economical and did not allow the batters to go after them. Migael Pretorius and Imad Wasim picked up two wickets each and Mohammad Amir contributed with one as well. They have started the tournament on a positive note and will look to take that into the next game.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots started the chase poorly losing wickets early and building pressure on themselves. Evin Lewis could not get going but his partner Andre Fletcher got off to a watchful start. Dewald Brevis got going and showed his hitting ability but got dismissed soon after. Andre Fletcher was dismissed for a labored 31 and other than Sherfane Rutherford none of the other batters looked like they could bat on this wicket. In the end, it was a feeble effort from a team that many expected to challenge for the title once again.
This has been a one-sided affair in the curtain raiser of this tournament with the champions suffering a 47-run defeat. St Kitts and Nevis Patriots were disappointing in all aspects of the game and will have a lot of things to work on before their next game if they are to sustain a title defense in this edition. Jamaica was touted as a much-weaker side on paper but have put on a clinical performance to dismantle their opposition. This is a good start for them and they will hope to take this winning momentum deep into the tournament.
