That concludes our coverage of today's match, which was unfortunately cut short due to rain. The points will be shared between the Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals. The SA20 action continues as we have a game lined up on Friday, the 17th of January. It will be between the Durban Super Giants and the Sunrisers Eastern Cape at 9 pm IST (3.30 pm GMT). Do join us for the early build up as well. Until next time, thank you for your company. Cheers!
Here's a quick recap of what happened in the first innings! The Pretoria Capitals were sent to bat first and scored 138/8 in their 20 overs, struggling against spinners under overcast skies. They started poorly and struggled throughout. Kyle Verreynne scored the most, with 39 runs, while Jimmy Neesham contributed 30. Liam Livingstone had an off day, scoring just 22 off 30 balls. Despite some resistance, the Capitals' total was considered below par. Donovan Ferreira and Moeen Ali excelled in bowling for the Super Kings, claiming two wickets each.
Update 11.58 pm IST (6.28 pm GMT) - That's it! The game has been officially ABANDONED DUE TO RAIN, with the teams sharing the points. Despite initial hopes for a full game, the rain ultimately made it impossible to continue play! So with this, the Joburg Super Kings have climbed to the top of the standings after their latest match, moving up from second place, while the Pretoria Capitals have risen to third, but with having played an extra game than the teams below them. In their next fixtures, the Joburg Super Kings will travel to face the MI Cape Town, and the Pretoria Capitals will host Paarl Royals at home.
Update 11.46 pm IST (6.16 pm GMT) - No official word yet but given the heavy rain and the formation of large puddles at Wanderers Stadium, the chances of any further play today looks very low.
Any football fans in the house? We have an EPL game between Manchester United and Southampton tomorrow at 1.30 am IST (8 pm GMT, today). Manchester United is currently 14th in the Premier League and have struggled under Ruben Amorim. The good part is that they recently won against Arsenal in the FA Cup, 3rd round in penalties, which might have boosted their confidence. Southampton are at the rock bottom of the Premier League table but secured a 3-0 victory over Swansea City in the FA Cup. They are desperately in search of a win!
As we wait for the rain to stop, here is what happened in yesterday's SA20 game at Boland Park between the Paarl Royals and the MI Cape Town. The former claimed a decisive 6 wicket victory with an outstanding performance. After winning the toss and choosing to field, MI Cape Town struggled with a cautious batting approach, finishing with 158/4, highlighted by Rassie van der Dussen's unbeaten 91. In response, Lhuan-dre Pretorius turned the match around for the Royals with an impressive 83, surviving some early dropped catches. Later, David Miller’s composed 24, led the Royals to victory with an over to spare.
Update 11.12 pm IST (5.42 pm GMT) - Back at the Wanderers Stadium, the live visuals here are not looking good and it is raining heavily. Agh, this is frustrating!
Meanwhile, you guys can switch tabs and enjoy the coverage of the ongoing ILT20, 2025 match between the Desert Vipers and MI Emirates. The latter have posted a total of 159 runs in their first innings. The Desert Vipers are currently chasing this target and require 42 runs in the final 5 overs. Fakhar Zaman is at the crease, contributing significantly with a score of 60 runs, and is ably supported by Sam Curran. That game is surely going down the wire.
Update 10.49 pm IST (5.19 pm GMT) - OH DEAR! Just as Faf du Plessis and Devon Conway walked into bat, the skies opened up and it started to rain here at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg! The groundsmen got the covers on in a flash. Let's hope it's just a passing shower. Fingers crossed.
... THE RUN CHASE ...
Right then, Pretoria Capitals end up with a below-par total of 138 runs. They will hope for their bowlers to pick some early wickets and claw their way into the game. For Joburg Super Kings, the onus is on their batters to put a gritty stand and chase this down. Which side will come out on top? We shall find out together. Chase coming up shortly...
For the Capitals, Kyle Verreynne played well. Liam Livingstone struggled at the crease, managing only 22 runs off 30 balls and was dismissed in the 18th over. James Neesham contributed a respectable 30 runs before his dismissal. Aside from these efforts, only Will Jacks and Migael Pretorius managed to escape the demise of single-digit scores, as the rest of the batting lineup faltered dramatically against the Super Kings’ bowlers.
The Joburg Super Kings delivered a remarkable bowling performance, effectively dismantling the batting order of the Pretoria Capitals. Their bowlers consistently took wickets at crucial moments, particularly when promising partnerships began to form. Moeen Ali and Donovan Ferreira each claimed two wickets. Imran Tahir added to the tally with one wicket, while the pacers David Wiese, Hardus Viljoen and Evan Jones each chipped in with another.
