A total of 45 players, consisting of 12 overseas and 33 domestic talents, are part of a week-long tournament. The final will take place on August 29, with the top two teams qualifying for it.

Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) were the inaugural champions in 2022, and Barbados Royals lifted the trophy in the 2023 season, beating Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Final.

Here is an overview of the tournament from the first two seasons.

Teams

Barbados Royals – 2023 Champions

The defending champions have retained a major portion of the side, with international talents like Hayley Matthews, Amanda Jade Wellington, and Laura Harris continuing in the side. They have signed Sri Lankan legend Chamari Athapaththu and Australian batter Georgia Redmayne, who was the breakout star from the recently concluded The Hundred Women, leading London Spirit to a title.

In the draft, they managed to sign experienced players Rashada Williams and Shabika Gajnabi, who bring stability to the side, along with retained veterans Chinelle Henry, Afy Fletcher and Aaliyah Alleynne.

Squad:

Retained Players: Hayley Matthews, Chinelle Henry, Afy Fletcher, Aaliyah Alleyne, Qiana Joseph, Amanda Jade Wellington, Laura Harris

Overseas Signings: Chamari Athapaththu, Georgia Redmayne

Drafted Players: Rashada Williams, Shabika Gajnabi, Cherry Ann Fraser, Trishan Holder, Djeneba Joseph, Naijanni Cumberbatch

Trinbago Knight Riders – 2022 Champions

Inaugural champions TKR retained only domestic talents, including 'World Boss' Deandra Dottin, with Kycia Knight and Shamilia Connell the other notable local retention. Ahead of the new season, they have made several star-studded signings - Meg Lanning, Jess Jonassen, Jemimah Rodrigues and Shikha Pandey. During the draft, they signed the veteran spinner Anisa Mohammed, along with other notable names in Chedean Nation and Kyshona Knight

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) are the only team yet to win a WCPL title.

Any hope this season, then? Well, for starters, they have a legendary captain in the form of Stefanie Taylor. They have also roped in the likes of Shakera Selman, Karishma Ramharack, Shabnim Ismail and Erin Burns to strengthen their setup. Lauren Winfield-Hill will be in focus to do much of the heavy lifting alongside South African Chloe Tryon.

All that remains to be seen is whether they can break the trophy drought.

Retained Players: Stafanie Taylor, Shemaine Campbelle, Natasha McLean, Karishma Ramharack, Shakera Selman, Shabnim Ismail

Big names in action at the Women's CPL 2024

Players under spotlight

Georgia Redmayne (Barbados Royals)

Australian batter Georgia Redmayne is coming into the Women’s CPL 2024 after a terrific season of The Women’s Hundred 2024, where she was the third-highest run-scorer (229 runs) in the tournament. She played a key role in the London Spirit winning the championship.

She will hope to continue her good form in the WCPL, which might help her get selected for the Australian national team for the upcoming T20 World Cup in October.

Chloe Tryon (Guyana Amazon Warriors)

South African all-rounder Chloe Tryon’s form has been up and down in the WT20s in 2024. The hard-hitting batter had a decent season with the bat at the Hundred 2024 as she scored 191 runs in eight games with one 50+ score.

However, her record with the ball was poor, as she managed just three wickets in eight games. Given that the T20 World Cup is around the corner, Tryon would be hoping for a good showing at the WCPL.

Jess Jonassen (Trinbago Knight Riders)

While Jess Jonassen might not be the first name on the Australian team sheet, her performances over the last few months have been nothing short of dazzling.

The all-rounder has not only shown her worth at the WPL 2024 but also continued that run in The Women's Hundred, where she played a key role in Welsh Fire's run to the final. She picked up 11 and 12 wickets in both these tournaments, respectively, and has been in good form with the ball.

With the bat, too, she has done well, having slammed 242 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 134 across these two tournaments.

Lauren Winfield-Hill (Guyana Amazon Warriors)

English opening batter Lauren Winfield-Hill will be expecting to get back in form as the right-hand batter has not had a great run in domestics and in the recently concluded Women’s Hundred. Representing Oval Invincibles, she managed just 135 runs in nine games, averaging just 16.87.

With Guyana having a fragile-looking batting line-up, Winfield-Hill will be expected to step up in the top order.
