Chasing 142, West Indies women got off to the most attacking of fashions during the T20 World Cup 2024, smashing 67 runs in the first six overs against England in Dubai on October 15. Hayley Matthews helped the Windies get off to a flying start, smashing Lauren Bell for a six on the second delivery of the run chase.
Bell delivering the ball down the leg-side didn’t really help her case, as Matthews pounced upon the chance to pick up two more boundaries in the over, with 14 runs from the first over. At the other end, Qiana Joseph took a liking to Nat Sciver-Brunt with a four off the first ball.
However, Jopseh offered a chance to Sophia Dunkley on the boundary only for the English fielder to drop a straightforward opportunity. Charlie Dean’s introduction didn’t make too much of a difference as Joseph continued to attack, with the Windies shaving 36 runs off the target in just three overs.
While it was an assumption that Sophie Ecclestone could bring about a change in fortune, the left-handed Joseph absolutely smashed the left-arm spinner for two boundaries. Joseph continued her onslaught with a four against Sciver-Brunt before Alice Capsey dropped a dolly to give her a third life in the clash.
Eventually, West Indies finished their powerplay 67/0, the highest-ever score in the first six overs against England in T20 World Cup history. Incidentally, it was also the highest powerplay total in this year’s T20 World Cup. Prior to this clash, the most England had conceded in the powerplay of a match in this tournament was just 37 against South Africa.
However, cometh the biggest moment, their bowling faltered under the brute of West Indies.
