We put everything we had: Zeeshan Maqsood
The Oman all-rounder wasn't too impressed with the way his team batted and fielded against Namibia
Oman’s veteran all-rounder Zeeshan Maqsood praised the bowling unit for taking the game against Namibia to the Super Over despite having just 109 runs to defend. Oman eventually lost the Super Over, failing to get the required 21 runs.
Asked to bat in Barbados on June 2 (Sunday), Oman were bundled out in 19.4 overs. Maqsood (20-ball 22) and Khalid Kail (39-ball 34) were the only ones to cross the 20-run mark. In the second innings, Namibia needed five runs in the final over and had six wickets in hand.
Mehran Khan didn’t concede any run in the first three deliveries and also got two wickets. Malan Kruger and David Wiese then got three runs off the next two deliveries, leaving two to get from the last ball. Wiese missed the ball but the wicketkeeper, who was standing close to the stumps, failed to collect the ball and that allowed the two batters to get a single.
Wiese and Gerhard Erasmus then completely dominated the Super Over and batted Oman out of the contest. “Honestly, we were not that confident, but we knew we had that ability to fight back. We have previously won games with 130 runs,” said Maqsood.
“We put everything that we had – so slowly, slowly. I think that's how the Namibian side, we just kept them quiet and we didn't give so many loose balls where they can score runs. So an outstanding comeback. Unfortunately, we couldn't make it super over.”
Maqsood and Kail added 27 runs for the fourth wicket but the former got out in the seventh over and Oman failed to recover thereafter. “I think my wicket was also crucial at that time. I was getting the runs because of the wicket and their bowling - they bowled very well. So, we couldn't score so much of runs.”
“I think if we did not drop those catches, where I think, three or four catches we dropped. The last ball, we should have kept that ball and we should have won the game. And Mehran Khan, he's outstanding. He bowled very well, saving six runs in last over against a strong side. That is awesome and plus point and great performance.”
