'We have different perspectives' - Sangakkara on Samson's dismissal

The RR skipper's dismissal turned out to be a crucial juncture for the team as they went on to lose by 20 runs to DC on May 7 (Tuesday) in Delhi

Rajasthan Royals (RR) were very much in control of the game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 7 (Tuesday) until skipper Sanju Samson was dismissed for 86 when he was caught at the long-on boundary. Shai Hope held on to a brilliant catch and, in doing so, also ensured that his feet just about stayed clear of the ropes.

The third umpire, too, declared it out, but Samson was unhappy and had a chat with the umpire. Samson's dismissal led to a collapse, and RR eventually lost the game by 20 runs.

RR director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara, however, has hinted that his side have a different perspective on the incident, which they will share with the umpires.

“It depends on replays and angles. Sometimes, you think the foot has touched. It was a difficult one for the third umpire to judge; the game was at a crucial stage, but it happened," Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference.

"We have different perspectives, but at the end of the day, you have to stand by the decision the third umpire has made, even if we have a different opinion on it. Of course, we will share it with the umpires, but I thought, irrespective of that, we should've seen the game home. Delhi played well."

After Samson was dismissed, RR completely collapsed. They managed just 39/4 from the final 26 deliveries to finish on 201/8 in pursuit of 222.

Samson is one of two wicketkeeper-batters picked in India's T20 World Cup squad. The RR skipper is having one of his best IPL seasons, having slammed 471 runs in 11 innings already at an impressive strike rate of 163.54, which also includes five fifties. Sangakkara believes that Samson will be a superb addition to the Indian squad at the marquee event.

“With Sanju, the biggest thing this season has been his clarity about the way he should bat. He is an exceptional player. When he is fresh and focused, there is nothing he can’t do. He is going to be an exceptional addition to the Indian team for the T20 World Cup,” Sangakkara said.

Despite the loss, RR remain second in the IPL 2024 points table, level with Kolkata Knight Riders (RR) on 16 points from 11 matches. They will play Chennai Super Kings (CSK) next on May 12 (Sunday).
